Inspirations: Shameless Maya

On behalf of #WCW or "Woman Crush Wednesday" (for those who don't know) and Maya's birthday, I've decided to write about the wonderful and beautiful, Shameless Maya; one of the biggest inspirations in my life. You can already tell by her screen name, Shameless Maya, that this woman is pretty amazing. Now let me tell you how amazing she really is and what she means to me.

I was first introduced to Maya last summer, when my close friend, Sabrina, showed me a link to one of her tech videos called "Which Camera Should I Buy? For Beginners." I instantly fell in love with her voice; the way she explained in detail all of the different kinds of cameras. I also loved the way she edited the very helpful video with (as I would say) #jamworthy music by Jay Elliot; I was very satisfied. With that one pleasant video, I roamed around her YouTube channel and shortly decided, "Hey, I really like this girl. I'm gonna watch all of her YouTube videos from the very start to the newest one." Since it was the summer and school had been delayed because of the strike going on, I spent most of my days watching videos of Shameless Maya.

I actually have not finished watching all of her videos until her latest one because school commenced again and well, let's just leave it at that. Anyways, with every video of Maya I watched, the more I admired her, loved her, and looked up to her. As an artist, she basically created a YouTube channel to take on the challenge of shamelessly promoting herself for one full year. As an aspiring artist/designer (not at the time, but now), I find her videos very helpful. I love seeing the progress Maya has made ever since her first YouTube video posted back on July 15th, 2012. As I watched more and more of her videos, not only was her shameless attitude and advice influencing me for the better, but I also found things that I have in common with her, like philosophy, having a relationship with God, being Filipina (she's half!), and much more.

In one video called "Shameless Inspiration/Tips & Updates," Maya introduced philosophical books that she found inspiring. One of the books I ended up reading is called "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom" which kind of changed my life. In summary, the 4 agreements are #1 Be impeccable with your word, #2 Donโ€™t take anything personally, #3 Donโ€™t make assumptions and #4 Always do your best. I totally recommend this book, it's super motivational and beautifully moving. She gives you advice, she tells you her own personal stories, and she's just so genuine. Isn't she amazing? Yes, yes she is.

Shameless Maya has become someone I would lean towards whenever I felt down. I say "felt," because I've grown so much since I was first introduced to her. I've grown to not depend on other people to restore my happiness. I love her so much. Her personality is so lovable and contagious, you just can't get enough of her. I love how she embraces her Filipino blood, her amazing hair, her personal style. Overall, I love how she accepts who she is and flaunts what she's got, whether it would be considered a flaw or not.

There is one thing that Shameless Maya didn't teach me, but showed me. She showed me what beauty truly is. Yes, when I first watched her videos, I found her pretty, but when her personality full of chutzpah shined through, I didn't remember Maya by what she looked like, but by how she acted, what she said, the positive and real vibes she shared. I find her beautiful. She has a beautiful mind. I don't mean to offend anyone when I say this, but Shameless Maya was the first person who has shown me, by just being her shameless self, that looks don't matter. Confidence and being yourself is attractive. SHAMELESS MAYA, YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING AND ONE OF MY BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS. Love this crazy lady, forever.

Lastly, I would like to give a shout out to Sabrina. Without you, I wouldn't have discovered this beautiful, now 33-but-doesn't-look-33-year-old. Happy Birthday, Shameless Maya! I hope I'll see you when I go to California this summer, but if not, one day... I would love to meet you.

Much love,
